What an Emergency Drain Callout Actually Includes (and What Bumps the Price Up)
Honest breakdown of what you get in an emergency drain callout: arrival, diagnosis, clearing and proof it flows. Plus what genuinely adds to the cost.

If you have water backing up into a sink, bath or toilet at midnight, the last thing you need is a surprise bill at the end of it. This guide walks you through exactly what a reputable emergency drain callout covers — and what can legitimately push the price higher — so you know what you are agreeing to before anyone knocks on the door.
What a Standard Callout Should Include
1. A Confirmed Arrival Window
A genuine 24-hour drainage service will give you a realistic time frame, not a vague “we’ll be there as soon as we can.” For most of the TW postcode area — including Ashford, Staines, Feltham and surrounding streets — expect an honest estimate based on where the nearest available engineer is, not a sales-floor promise.
2. Initial Diagnosis
When the engineer arrives, the first job is to find the cause, not just start poking rods into a drain. This usually means:
- Asking a few quick questions (when did it start, which fixtures are affected, any recent changes?)
- Checking which drains are running slowly or not at all
- Identifying whether the blockage is inside the property or in the shared section of the drain
A diagnosis matters because the wrong method wastes time and money.
3. Clearing the Blockage
Depending on what the diagnosis shows, clearing will typically involve one or more of the following:
- Drain rods for straightforward blockages close to an access point
- High-pressure water jetting for stubborn grease, scale or root intrusion further along the pipe
- Manual removal of a visible obstruction — a build-up of wipes, hair or food waste at a trap or gulley
The engineer should explain which method they are using and why.
4. Confirmation That the Drain Is Actually Flowing
This is the step that separates a proper job from a rushed one. Before leaving, the engineer should run water through the affected fixture and confirm flow is restored. If a CCTV camera survey is needed to verify the pipe is clear, that should be discussed openly as an additional item — not slipped into the final bill without warning.
5. A Written Record
You should receive a clear written record of what was found, what was done and any follow-up work recommended. This is useful for your own records and, if water has caused damage to flooring or walls, as evidence for your insurer. The record belongs to you.
What Can Legitimately Increase the Cost
Price honesty is important. Here are the genuine factors that add to a callout charge — none of them should come as a shock if they are explained upfront.
Time of Day
Out-of-hours work — evenings, weekends and bank holidays — costs more than a standard weekday visit. This is standard across the trade. A company that charges the same at 2 a.m. on a Sunday as it does on a Tuesday afternoon is almost certainly hiding the difference somewhere else.
Depth and Access
A blockage in an easy-to-reach trap takes minutes. A blockage 15 metres down a shared drain beneath a driveway takes considerably longer and may require specialist equipment.
Jetting vs Rodding
High-pressure jetting is more effective for grease and scale but costs more than rodding. If the engineer recommends it, ask why — a good engineer will explain clearly.
Root Intrusion
Tree roots entering a pipe are a common problem in older parts of the TW area. Cutting them back and flushing the debris takes time, and if they have cracked the pipe, a repair or relining job will be needed separately.
Multiple Fixtures Affected
If the blockage is in a shared drain and several toilets, sinks or baths are backing up, the engineer may need to work through multiple access points.
CCTV Survey
Not every callout needs a camera, but if the engineer cannot locate or clear the blockage by conventional means, a CCTV inspection is the sensible next step. It should be quoted as a separate item.
What Should Never Be Added Without Warning
- Extra charges for “call-out administration” not mentioned when you booked
- Vague line items with no explanation
- Pressure to agree to additional work before the first job is finished
If anything appears on a quote that was not discussed, ask for it to be explained before work starts.
A Note on National Franchise Companies
Large national drainage franchises often advertise low headline rates. What they sometimes do not advertise is that the headline rate covers only the first few minutes of work, with additional charges layering on top. Local engineers working a defined area tend to be more straightforward about pricing because their reputation depends on repeat custom from the same streets and postcodes.
If Your Drain Is Blocked Right Now
Do not pour boiling water, bleach or chemical unblockers into a drain that is already backing up — you risk making the situation worse and creating a hazard.
