How to Choose a Drainage Company That Won't Rip You Off

A blocked drain is stressful enough without worrying whether the company you’ve called is going to charge you three times what the job is worth. Unfortunately, rogue drainage traders are a genuine problem across the TW postcode area and the rest of the UK. This guide helps you spot the warning signs before anyone turns up at your door — and tells you what a fair, honest job actually looks like.

Red Flags to Watch For

1. “Per-metre” jetting charges

Some companies quote a low callout fee to get through your door, then charge per metre of drain they jet. A typical domestic drain run can be 20–30 metres or more. What sounded like a reasonable job suddenly becomes an enormous bill. A reputable company will assess the job and give you a fixed price — before any work begins.

2. No written quote before work starts

If a tradesperson refuses to give you a figure in writing (or even verbally, clearly stated) before they start, that is a serious warning sign. You have no obligation to let anyone begin work without agreeing a price first. A legitimate drainage company will quote you upfront.

3. Vague or verbal-only pricing

“We’ll see how it goes” is not a price. Neither is “it depends on what we find” without any ceiling figure. Uncertainty about what’s underground is understandable — but a trustworthy company will explain the range of outcomes and what each would cost, so you can make an informed decision.

4. The “while we’re here” upsell

This is one of the most common tactics. A drain is unblocked, and then the engineer says something like: “While we’re here, we noticed your pipework looks corroded — we can sort that today for £X.” Sometimes this is genuine advice. Often it is not. Ask for photographs of any alleged problem. A good company will show you evidence and let you decide in your own time.

5. Pressure to sign paperwork on the spot

Any company that rushes you into signing a works authorisation before you’ve had a chance to read it, or that implies your drain will collapse if you don’t act immediately, deserves scepticism. Real emergencies exist — but most drain issues allow you a few minutes to read what you’re agreeing to.

6. No verifiable local presence

Search the company name. Can you find a real address, a consistent phone number, and some history? Fly-by-night operators often use multiple trading names and generic websites with no local detail. Companies with genuine roots in the TW area — Whitton, Twickenham, Hounslow, Richmond and surrounding postcodes — tend to be easier to hold accountable.

What a Fair Callout Should Include

When you call a reputable drainage company for an emergency unblocking, here is what you should reasonably expect:

  • A clear price agreed before work starts — fixed where possible, or a transparent range if the blockage is unknown
  • An explanation of what they found — cause of the blockage, location, severity
  • Photographs or CCTV footage if a camera survey is carried out (this belongs to you)
  • A written job report — useful if you need to show your landlord, managing agent, or insurer what happened and why
  • No surprise add-ons — if additional work is genuinely needed, it should be quoted separately and you should be free to decline

Questions Worth Asking Before You Book

  • “Can you give me a fixed price, or at least a maximum, before you start?”
  • “Do you charge per metre for jetting, or is it a flat rate?”
  • “Will I get a written report of what you found?”
  • “Are there any additional charges I should know about?”

A company confident in its pricing will answer these questions straightforwardly. Evasion is itself an answer.

A Note on CCTV Drain Surveys

A CCTV survey can be a genuinely useful diagnostic tool — particularly for recurring blockages or older properties with clay or cast-iron pipework. However, it is not always necessary for a straightforward blockage. Be wary of any company that insists on a survey as a condition of unblocking a drain that could be cleared by jetting alone. Ask why the survey is needed and what it will tell you that the jetting process would not.
