Gas Engineers in Twickenham: When You Need One and How to Check They're Registered

Not every plumbing job is a gas job — but the ones that are must, by law, be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s when you need a gas engineer rather than a general plumber, and how to make sure the person turning up is actually qualified to touch your gas.

Plumber or gas engineer — what’s the difference?

A plumber works on water: leaks, burst pipes, blocked drains, taps and cylinders. A Gas Safe registered engineer is legally qualified to work on gas appliances and pipework — boilers, gas fires, hobs and the supply itself. Many jobs need both skill sets, which is why we hold Gas Safe registration alongside our plumbing work.

When you need a gas engineer

Call a Gas Safe registered engineer for:

  • Boiler repairs, servicing or installation
  • Gas appliance faults — a hob, fire or water heater not working safely
  • A suspected gas leak or a smell of gas (see below — this is an emergency)
  • A Gas Safety Certificate / CP12, especially if you’re a landlord — see our guide on booking a Gas Safety Certificate in Twickenham
  • No hot water where the fault is on the boiler or gas side

If you smell gas, treat it as an emergency

A smell of gas is not a “book it in” job. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately, open windows, avoid electrical switches and naked flames, and leave the property. Our gas leak emergency page has the full step-by-step.

How to check an engineer is Gas Safe registered

Before anyone works on your gas:

  1. Ask for their Gas Safe ID card — every registered engineer carries one.
  2. Check the registration number. Ours is 501588. You can verify any number on the official Gas Safe Register.
  3. Check the card covers the work — the back lists what the engineer is qualified to do (boilers, cookers, etc.).

Never let an unregistered person work on your gas, however cheap. It’s illegal and dangerous.
