Does Your Heating System Need a Power Flush?
A central heating system quietly accumulates rust, limescale and magnetite (black iron oxide sludge) every year. Once that build-up reaches a critical level, your boiler works harder, your radiators heat unevenly and your energy bills creep up — all without an obvious single fault to point to.
A professional power flush clears the system thoroughly, restoring it to something close to its original efficiency.
Signs You Need One
- Cold spots at the bottom of radiators — sludge settles and blocks flow at the lowest points
- Radiators slow to warm up even after bleeding
- Boiler making banging, kettling or gurgling noises — scale on the heat exchanger is a common cause
- Black or dark brown water when you bleed a radiator
- Some rooms consistently colder than others despite the thermostat being set correctly
- Pump failing repeatedly — sludge accelerates wear on moving parts
- New boiler being installed — most manufacturers require a clean system to validate the warranty
What a Power Flush Involves
Our Gas Safe registered engineers connect a high-flow, low-pressure power-flush machine to your central heating circuit. A powerful cleansing agent is circulated through every radiator, pipe run and the boiler heat exchanger, breaking down sludge and scale deposits.
Each radiator is isolated and flushed individually so that loosened debris is pushed out of the system rather than redistributed. The process typically takes four to eight hours depending on the size of the property and how contaminated the system is.
Once flushing is complete, the system is refilled with clean water and dosed with a corrosion inhibitor to slow future build-up.
MagnaClean Filter Fitting
We strongly recommend fitting a MagnaClean or equivalent inline magnetic filter at the same time. This device sits on the return pipe to the boiler and captures magnetite particles before they can re-enter the heat exchanger. It is the single most effective way to protect the work a power flush has done and to extend boiler life. Many boiler manufacturers now require one as a condition of their warranty.
Benefits You Can Expect
- Better heat output from every radiator
- Lower gas bills — a cleaner system reaches temperature faster and maintains it with less effort
- Quieter boiler once scale is removed from the heat exchanger
- Reduced risk of pump and valve failure
- Longer boiler lifespan — sludge is one of the leading causes of premature boiler breakdown
Our Engineers
All power-flush work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers. We cover the full TW postcode area, including Twickenham, Richmond, Teddington, Isleworth, Hounslow, Feltham and Staines.
Ready to book or want a quote? Call us on 07725 479493 — we are available around the clock and can usually arrange a survey or booking within a day or two. Tell us the number of radiators in your home and we will give you a clear, no-obligation price before any work begins.
What to do right now in Strawberry Hill
- Check whether individual radiators are cold at the bottom — this points to sludge build-up rather than a fault with the boiler itself.
- Bleed each radiator to release any trapped air before booking a flush, so the engineer can assess the true state of the system.
- Note any unusual noises from the boiler or pump — banging, kettling or gurgling are useful details to pass on.
- Avoid adding leak-sealing additives to the system before the flush, as these can clog the power-flush machine.
Marc has been fantastic, I can't recommend him enough. He responded exceptionally quickly to our plea for help when our boiler stopped working. No hot water with kids = nightmare. He offered an appointment the following day and arrived when he said he would.
