How to Stop a Burst Pipe Before the Plumber Arrives

A burst pipe can release a surprising amount of water in a very short time. The good news is that the most important steps are straightforward, and you do not need any tools or plumbing knowledge to carry them out. Work through the steps below in order, then call us on 07725 479493 and we will be with you as quickly as possible.

Step 1: Turn Off the Mains Water Supply

This is the single most important thing you can do. Stopping the flow of water limits the damage immediately.

Find your stopcock. In most TW-area properties it is located in one of these places:

  • Under the kitchen sink
  • In a downstairs cupboard near the front door
  • In the garage or utility room
  • In a ground-floor bathroom or cloakroom

Turn it clockwise (right) until it stops. If the stopcock is stiff or seized — common in older Richmond and Isleworth properties — wrap a cloth around it for grip and try again. Do not force it so hard that it snaps.

If you cannot find or operate the indoor stopcock, the external stop valve is usually located under a small metal cover in the pavement or front garden. You will need a long-handled stopcock key to operate it; these cost a few pounds from any hardware shop and are worth keeping at home.

Step 2: Drain the System

Once the mains is off, open every cold tap in the house and flush every toilet. This empties the pipes quickly, reducing the pressure behind the leak and the volume of water that can escape.

Do not use any hot taps yet — see Step 3.

Step 3: Switch Off the Boiler and Hot Water

If you have a hot water cylinder, switch off the boiler and the immersion heater at the consumer unit (fuse box). Then open the hot taps to drain the hot water system. This prevents your boiler firing against an empty system, which can cause further damage.

If you have a combi boiler with no separate cylinder, turning off the mains is usually sufficient — but switch the boiler off at the programmer as a precaution.

Step 4: Protect the Area from Water Damage

While the system drains, do what you can to limit secondary damage:

  • Move furniture, rugs, and valuables away from pooling water
  • Lay down towels or use buckets to collect drips
  • If water is coming through a ceiling light fitting or socket, do not touch it — switch off the electricity at the consumer unit for that circuit or, if in doubt, the whole board
  • Take photographs of the damage for your insurance claim before mopping up

Step 5: Locate and Identify the Burst

Once the flow has stopped, try to find where the pipe has failed. Common locations include:

  • Loft pipes — particularly after a cold snap in areas such as Feltham and Staines, where roof spaces can freeze
  • Under floorboards — look for damp patches or lifted boards
  • Behind stud walls — listen for dripping sounds
  • Where pipes run through external walls — frost damage is frequent here

You do not need to repair the pipe yourself. Simply note the location so you can describe it clearly when you call.

Step 6: Apply a Temporary Fix If You Have One

If the burst is visible and accessible, a temporary repair can buy time while you wait:

  • Pipe repair tape (self-amalgamating tape) wrapped tightly around a small split can slow a drip significantly
  • A pipe repair clamp from a hardware shop can bridge a crack in a straight section of pipe
  • Even wrapping the area tightly with a cloth and securing it with a jubilee clip can reduce a drip to a trickle

These are not permanent solutions. They simply reduce further damage until a qualified plumber carries out a proper repair.

What to Tell Us When You Call
